Developing a three-dimensional Body Scanner based on a high-resolution optical Time-of-Flight Camera

The goal of the project is to develop an innovative full-body scanner that allows to capture the complete surface of th human body including the soles of the feet with high resolution. The prototype should be close easily transferable to a product. The idea is to use multiple sensor heads that can capture colored point clouds or depth images of the body and that rotate around the subject.

The project goals are as follows: The group of Prof. Ringbeck will develop a high-resolution Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera and the MASCOR Institute will develop the BodyScanner application including the point cloud registration and computing the model of the subject's body surface. The ToF camera is supposed to have a lateral resolution of 1920x1080 pixels with a depth resolution of 1mm. In the first part of the project we will create a prototyp that uses existing 3D sensor technology. In the second phase then the newl developed camera prototype will be integrated in the scanner. DUe to its improved noise handling we can achieve precision higher than 1mm and the system will have a better resolution and it will be more robust than other existing solutions.

The concept of the body scanner is to rotate the cameras around the subject. That way, the system benefits from collecting images of the same points from different viewing angles which can be used to reduce noise in the images. Besides, shadow effects, e.g. from the arms occluding parts of the body, can be reduced if not even eliminated completely. To increase the precision even further, markers on the surface might be included in the recording process.
